Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence is an escalating patttern of violence or intimidation by an intimate parthner, which is used to gaining power and control over you. ( maybe one day you decide to stand up for yourself- and your parthner dosen't like it and starts to throw fits-hitting the wall, chairs, and possibly you.)
"Domestic Violence Grown Old" is when domestic violence started earlier in- life and persists into old age.
"Late Onset Domestic Violence" begins in old age. (The could had been sistuations where the relationship started to get either emotional or physical abusive.- but most of the time it's emotional.)
Late Onset Domestic Violence can lead to.......
- Retirement
- Changing roles of family members
- Disability
- Sexual Changes
- Weight growth/loss ( look at neck or arms first)
Domestic Violence Signs:
Some examples of signs are.....
- Frequent Injuries, with the excuse of "accidents"
- Frequent and sudden absences from work and school
- Frequent harassing phone calls from the parthner (i'll kill you if you don't come home)
- Fear of parthner, references to the parthners anger
- Personality changes
- Excessive fear of conflict ( there scared to argue(sometimes even talk)with their parthner)
- Submissive behavior, lack of assertiveness
- Isolation from friends and family
- Insufficient resources to live (money, credit cards, a car/s)
- Depression, crying, low self-esteem
Domestic Violence Facts & Stats:
"The under reporting of domestic violence to police":
- Only about 1/2 of domestic violence incidents were reported to police. African American Women are more likely than other races to report their vicitization to police.
- The most common reasons for not reporting domestic violence to the police are that the victims view the incident as a personal or private manner, they fear retaliation from their abuse, and they not believe that the police can help them.
- Even with this dramatoc under-reporting , domestic violence calls constitute approximately 1/2 of all violent crime calls to police departments. (For example: 49% of the violent crime calls received by the D.C Metropolitan Police Departments in 2000 were for domestic violence incidents
